April 5, 2021, the Town of Goderich welcomed the first vessel to arrive for the 2021 navigation season.
Traditionally the first vessel is welcomed and it’s captain celebrated with the traditional Top Hat Ceremony.
The Algoma Intrepid captained by Capt. Kirk Lake was welcomed in a Covid appropriate way on the dockside by Mayor John Grace; Peter Baker, VP Operations at The Compass Goderich Mine and Rowland Howe, President of Goderich Port Management Corp. Also present were Ian MacAdam, the Harbour Master and Sean Thomas, Director of Operations for the Town of Goderich.
Goderich welcomes over 250 vessels per season but the arrival of the first vessel is always special. This year the Algoma Intrepid docked the mine to pick up a load of road salt.
The Algoma Niagara was previously loaded with salt but only after having spent time berthed in the port during the annual suspension of navigation and as such did not qualify to be the first vessel

Catching up with our First Captain of the 2020 Navigation Season
In an almost poetic and ironic turn of events, our fist captain was also close to our last captain. When the Algoma Sault captained by Capt. Raymond Schrempf was the first vessel into Goderich port at the start of the 2020 navigation season; it was in the midst of COVID-19 uncertainty and the traditional ceremony was postponed. We have tried to catch up with Capt. Schrempf all season.
Last Saturday March 6th 2021 we held a COVID-19 compliant ceremony on the dock beside the ship. The Mayor of Goderich John Grace presented the Top Hat as David Church of Compass Minerals and Rowland Howe, President of GPMC, looked on.
Having completed out 2020 / 21 navigation season we now await the first vessel of 2021. Hopefully it will be soon and we can again welcome and celebrate its captain.

The Port of Goderich Welcomes its First Cargo to the New Dock #8 and Wharf
Goderich, ON, August 31, 2020 - The Port of Goderich welcomed its first cargo to the newly created dock #8 and adjacent 4 acres of wharf on August 28, 2020. The Port was divested from the Federal ports system in 1999 and is owned by the Town of Goderich, operated by Goderich Port Management Corp. (GPMC). The first cargo to arrive came aboard the MV Saginaw a self-discharging bulk carrier owned by the Lower Lakes Towing Ltd, a Rand Logistics company. The 16,500 tons of aggregate was loaded at Bruce Mines in northern Lake Huron and is destined for highway construction purposes in this area. The customer was fittingly Miller – Lavis who was also the prime contractor on the building of the project.
“Lavis Contracting Co. Limited was very proud and excited not only in the construction of the new dock but being the first user of the dock.” said Bentley Ehgoetz, Divisional Manager of Lavis Contracting Co Limited “The use of the dock to bring in premium aggregate by ship, instead of by road, is another tool for our company to use in competing in a very competitive market.”
The expansion project began life almost 12 years ago and gained momentum when, in 2011, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) of the Province of Ontario, committed to funding support needed to complete a number of port improvements and create a new dock and wharf to the north of the existing harbour. The entire project has been completed with the use of Port funds and MTO support, with no cost to the local tax base. “This represents a new era for this port that has so long been constrained by the lack of available space,” said Rowland Howe, Presidentof GPMC, “Despite being one of the busiest Great Lakes ports, the footprint of the existing users and the proximity of the tourist areas left little space to welcome new cargos.”
“The expansion project for the port of Goderich is an incredible success,” said Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson. “The province has invested more than $15.7 million into this much needed upgrade and it is money well spent as it will bring increase business and commerce to the area for decades to come. Having taken people down to the harbour and seeing first hand the lakers using the new slip certainly demonstrates the value of the investment.”
The project, once defined, went through the provincial planning process for an individual Environmental Assessment (EA). Several local stakeholders and indigenous groups were consulted during that process. Final approvals were granted in 2017, and in-water construction commenced. During the EA process, several new fish habitat projects were supported to offset the loss of habitat due to the construction. These projects ranged from the rehabilitation of wetlands on Walpole Island to a study of fish feeding habits before and after construction. Construction involved the installation of a steel frame to support the dock and infilling 4 acres behind to create a wharf to land cargo area.
While it is expected that many cargos will arrive and leave on bulk self-unloading vessels, the dock has been constructed to allow heavy cargos to be handled as well. The wharf has no structures built on it, allowing maximum flexibility. The dock has seaway depth draft allowing the largest vessels navigating the Great Lakes and St Lawrence seaway system to berth at it. “We can now fully participate in the growing trend to marine transportation, it is safe, environmentally friendly and an economic route to markets both around the Great Lakes region and overseas,” said John Grace, Mayor of the Town of Goderich. “This creates a true marine gateway to southwestern Ontario, strategically positioned to play an increasing role in a world of changing markets and international trade.”
The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway, increasingly referred to as the “H2O Highway”, is a 3,700 Km marine highway that runs between Canada and the United States. Comprised of the St. Lawrence River, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Great Lakes, it flows directly into the commercial, industrial, and agricultural heartland of North America, home to some 100 million people. MV Saginaw, the first export vessel to be loaded with the new dust suppression spout
Parrish & Heimbecker, Limited (P&H) is pleased to announce the completion of two significant infrastructure projects at its Goderich Terminal.
The first is a new vessel-loading spout that has industry-leading dust suppression technology. The new spout monitors and controls the flow of grain at the discharge end through computerized sensors. From the deck, P&H operators are able to manage a concentrated cylinder of grain, placing it much closer to the bottom of the vessel and reducing unwanted dust emissions.
The second is a mooring dolphin, which will allow vessels of all configurations to be able to receive and discharge their cargos at the terminal, as well as maintain safe manoeuvring within the inner harbour. The entire site layout was reworked to handle larger class vessels and the dolphin provides security and stability for vessels at berth. Extensive collaboration between P&H, Goderich Port Manager Corp (GPMC) and Goderich town staff took place on the design.

Following a period of 3 months when no vessel crew were allowed to leave the secure area around berthed vessels, some restrictions are now being eased throughout the Province. In consultation with Huron Perth Public Health’s Medical Officer of Health, GPMC and the Town of Goderich is pleased to advise that crew will be permitted to get off the vessel when they arrive at the Port of Goderich.

The Chamber of Marine Commerce has established a Trusted Partner Initiative with its members to facilitate health and safety procedures for the movement of personnel between vessels and the shoreside during the COVID-19 pandemic. Marine shipping is a critical component of supply chains and has been recognized as an essential service, so health and safety procedures to ensure the protection of workers and the supply chain are critical.
The Trusted Partner Initiative, of which GPMC is a Trusted Partner, aims to build confidence that marine employers are taking consistent and appropriate measures to protect people's health while they are working onboard ships and when joining or leaving a ship. Trusted Partners will exchange information on the safety measures they have instructed their employees to follow.

The Algoma Sault arrived at the Parrish and Heimbecker elevator today to become the first vessel of the 2020 shipping season.
“Parrish and Heimbecker is proud to carry on the Top Hat tradition at Goderich Elevators starting the year off with 29K tonnes of western wheat from Thunder Bay to be unloaded at the two elevators in Goderich. This will provide a much needed cargo to various mills in Ontario” said Calvin Kerr, Manager of the Goderich Elevator.
This is normally a time for celebration as the first vessel often herald’s the arrival of spring.
Traditionally, Captain Raymond Schrempf would be welcomed with the Top Hat ceremony. This tradition dates back to the 1930s, and has its roots in early Great Lakes shipping, when it was often a race to get into Port first after the ice breaks up.
“Due to the extraordinary situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town and Port have elected not to have any public gathering to mark this occasion. Never the less it is an honor to welcome the crew of the Algoma Sault to our Port” said John C. Grace, Mayor of the Town of Goderich.
“The Algoma Sault and its crew will be welcomed in a more traditional way on a future visit” said Rowland Howe, President of GPMC. GPMC is the company charged with managing the Port operations for the Town of Goderich.
Great Lakes shipping provides enormous economic benefits for the region and makes it accessible from anywhere on the globe. Marine transportation is a clean, efficient and economic option for transporting a wide range of cargo.
A recent study in 2017 carried out by respected economic consultants Martin Associates of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, highlighted that activity of the Port of Goderich supports 2,774 jobs. In addition, the study found that maritime commerce on the waterway in 2017 supported $397.9 million in economic activity, $57.5 million in annual personal income, and $76.2 million in federal and province tax revenue.
In the same year ports and marine terminals on the Great Lakes Seaway System handled 285 million metric tons of cargo valued at $15.2 billion. This cargo included grain, iron ore, coal, manufactured iron and steel products, heavy lift/project cargoes, and salt. “Recent new development in the Port of Goderich improves and diversifies cargo capabilities; this also positions us to move into future planned development once the value is realized and further investments are secured.” said Rowland Howe.

Goderich, Ontario, February 12, 2020 – The Port of Goderich is the newest Green Marine participant and the tenth Great Lakes port authority to become part of the largest voluntary environmental certification program for North America’s maritime industry.
“We are pleased to be engaged as a member of Green Marine. The program is consistent with the goals of both the Port and the Town of Goderich to strive toward continuous environmental improvement. Our operations, the Town of Goderich and wharf expansion projects are inherently aligned with addressing key environmental issues,” said Rowland Howe, President of the Goderich Port Management Corporation.
The Port of Goderich is committed to sustainability as it continues to expand its regional economic importance, being the only deep-water port on the east shore of Lake Huron.
“We’re so pleased to welcome the Port of Goderich into the Green Marine program where it can benchmark its progress along with more than 40 other U.S. and Canadian ports,” said David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director.
Green Marine offers a step-by-step roadmap for port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines and shipyard managers to voluntarily and measurably reduce their environmental footprint. The comprehensive program addresses key environmental issues using 12 performance indicators that include lowering air emissions, minimizing community impacts, and demonstrating environmental leadership.

The weather station located in the Goderich Harbour has been upgraded and is up and running. Data from the weather station can be viewed on the GPMC website, by going to 'Weather and Water Levels' in the side menu and clicking 'Current Conditions'. Once there, you will be able to see the current temperature, wind direction, wind speed, wind gusts, rainfall amounts, and pressure as measured at the Goderich Habour. You can also see daily minimum and maximums, and trends over the last 12 hours.

The Algoma Niagara is the first ship into Goderich Harbour, kicking-off the 2019 shipping season. The ship arrived on April 2, 2019, captained by Capt. Chesley Thorne. It is a long-standing tradition in Goderich that the Captain of the first ship in the harbour in the spring is greeted by Council, municipal staff and local industry representatives upon arrival. The Captain is also presented with the Town's top hat and treated to dinner.

GODERICH – According to a new study, activity of the Port of Goderich supports 2,774 jobs. Inaddition, the study found that maritime commerce on the waterway in 2017 supported $397.9 million in economic activity, $57.5 million in annual personal income, and $76.2 million in federal and province tax revenue.
The comprehensive study, “Economic Impacts of Maritime Shipping in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region” was commissioned by the marine shipping industry in partnership with government agencies, including the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, the Chamber of Marine Commerce, Transport Canada and more.
“This report solidifies Goderich’s position as a major contributor of commerce on the Lakes and recent expansion will only serve to boost further economic impacts for the municipality,” said Rowland Howe, President of the Goderich Port Management Corporation. “Recent development improves and diversifies cargo capabilities and positions us to move into future planned development once further investments are secured.”
“While there has been consistent interest in the Port, the shortage of land has been a barrier to increased industrial development. We are now in a position to encourage further industrial development on the expanded port, and hope to move forward to approaching senior levels of government in an effort to identify a supporting financial partner for the up to $40 million of required investment for an additional 15 acres of land.” Says Larry McCabe, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Goderich.
The study measured the effects of cargo movements in 2017 at Great Lakes ports, including employment, personal income, business revenue, local purchases, and federal, provincial, and local taxes. Locally, 788 jobs were directly generated at the marine terminals at the Port of Goderich and another 1,423 of induced jobs contributed to the local economy.
In 2017, ports and marine terminals on the Great Lakes Seaway System handled 285 million metric tons of cargo valued at $15.2 billion. About the Study
The study, which uses 2017 data was carried out by respected economic consultants Martin Associates of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Martin Associates was retained to perform this analysis by a coalition of U.S. and Canadian Great Lakes and St. Lawrence marine industry stakeholders. A steering committee including the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (U.S.), The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (Canada), the American Great Lakes Ports Association, the Chamber of Marine Commerce, the Lake Carriers’ Association, the Shipping Federation of Canada, Transport Canada, the St. Lawrence Economic Development Council (SODES), and the St. Lawrence Ship Operators Association provided confidential data, guidance and oversight for this study.

The Chamber of Marine Commerce’s (CMC) second Marine Day on the Hill Reception, held on Oct. 16 in the Wellington Building. The night was the capstone event to the lobby group’s Marine Day on the Hill, where it spoke to members of the House Transportation Committee and Transport Minister Marc Garneau, who gave greetings and remarks at the event. From the Town of Goderich Larry Macabe, CAO and Chip Wilson (Director of Operations) attended with Rowland Howe President of GPMC.

The shipping season for 2018 is off to an early start, with the first ship arriving in Goderich Harbour on Sunday, March 25 at 1 PM. The CSL Laurention arrived in Goderich Harbour with a load of cargo for the Parrish and Heimbecker (P&H) Goderich Elevator.

The President of GPMC, Rowland Howe, recently participated in a panel discussion at the 2017 HWY H2O Conference in Toronto. The conference is an annual event hosted by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corportation.
At the conference, operators and shippers gather to discuss commerce throughout the St. Lawrence Seaway System and beyond. The event was a great opportunity to tell the story of the Goderich Port and highlight the expanded opportunities for shipping through the harbour as a result of the construction of a new dock and the wharf expansion.

The first ship of the 2017 shipping season arrived in Goderich Harbour, Wednesday April 5th at 9:30 p.m. Traditionally, the Captain of the first ship is welcomed to Goderich Town Hall for the presentation of the top hat and dinner; however in a break from tradition, this year's ceremony was held aboard the Robert S. Pierson. Town of Goderich CAO Larry McCabe and Director of Operations, Chip Wilson, presented Captain Ted Brown with the top hat. After taking on a load of salt, loaded over night, the Robert S. Pierson and her crew left for Detriot.

A sure sign that spring is on its way to Goderich is the annual Top Hat Ceremony.
Neil Olsen of the Cpt. Henry Jackman was the latest to add his signature to the top hat on Tues., Apr. 7 after rolled in the previous evening.
As is tradition for the captain of the first vessel to arrive and load a cargo each year, Olsen signed the symbolic top hat during a ceremony held in town council chambers.
This is the second time Olsen was involved with the ceremony as he captained the Algoway in 1999 as the first ship to arrive in the Port of Goderich.
The ceremony has long been a part of Goderich’s history.
In 1932, after a time of absence, the council of the time restored the ceremony and for the past eight decades, the tradition has carried on.
Up until the early 1980s, the first ship of the year arrived in April more times than not.
However since 1988, an April arrival has happened only five times, however, it is has occurred in the past three years.
Olsen said the ice on Lake Huron wasn’t as bad as last year, but still presented a challenge.
“Usually it takes us about five hours to arrive from Sarnia, this time it was eight hours,” he said.
According to Olsen, the crew enjoys coming to Goderich because of the convenient location of the port.
“I’ve always liked going into town, everything is right there for you,” he said.
Facts about the top hat tradition
- The earliest arrival was in March 15 in 2008 and 2009, by the CSL Niagara (Cpt. Jim Leaney) and the Canadian Olympic (Cpt. Richard Hesketh) respectively
- The latest arrival was April 29 in 1936 by the Superior (Cpt. Hudson)
- The M.V. Agawa Canyon holds the record for the amount of first arrivals to Goderich with nine
- In a nine-year period from 1988 to 1996, the arrival date was within the same five-day period each year.

HEATHER BOA News Now GODERICH – Work began this week on a $2.09-million project to improve the north pier at Goderich’s harbour.

“It’s an investment in one of Goderich’s greatest assets; the deep water port. It’s part of the strategy to bring it up to a high quality port to hopefully attract new cargoes,” said Rowland Howe, who is president of Goderich Port Management Corporation (GPMC), which has contracted the work to Finnbilt General Contractors Ltd. of Stratford.
The contractors will extend the quay, form and pour concrete, raise bollards used to tie off boats, and finish with an asphalt top graded to improve drainage and prevent water from pooling. The project will generally raise the pier to meet future lake levels.
Work will be intermittent, grinding to a halt or moving to the west end when boats are docked on the north pier in order to protect workers in the event there’s a break in the cables that tie down the boats. The contract between Finnbilt and the port corporation ensures boats coming in to the harbour are given priority.
At the same time, rocks will be ferried to the north breakwall to create a dynamic berm that will help to protect the inner harbour from wave action. A contractor for that work – and its price tag – is expected to be announced shortly.
This past Easter weekend, fishermen hoping to catch perch from a favourite spot on the north pier found themselves locked out after the construction company moved in equipment, even though an agreement with the town allowed access as long as there were no boats docked at the north pier.
Howe said they weren’t expecting the north pier to close until after the Easter weekend, but now it will remain closed to the public and construction signs posted until the end of construction, which is schedule for November 2013.
“When it’s a construction site, the public will be excluded. It’s just a requirement basically because they’re going to be digging up the actual deck of the pier,” Howe said.
This work is part of a 15-year plan to restore the harbour that includes improving the breakwalls, improve piers, and infill and expand the harbour. It is funded by users’ fees collected by GPMC.
“When the port was acquired from the federal government in 1999, it was identified that a lot of work needed to be done to bring it up to a decent standard. There had been a lack of investment,” Howe said.
Last year, Finnbilt completed a $900,000 upgrade at the south pier, reinforcing the pier’s surface, creating a four-foot barrier with an inset wave pattern, building a wheelchair accessible walkway along its south side, providing stairs to a narrow walkway to the south of the barrier and installing LED lighting. Tiered seating was installed at its end provides a sort of gathering place.
The work is part of the $47-million harbour improvement project, with funding from GPMC, the provincial government and Compass Minerals. A substantial part of the project will be the future infilling of about 14 acres off the north harbour to expand the wharf.
GPMC was established in 1999 when the town bought the port from the federal government. The not-for-profit corporation of port users operates the port on behalf of the town, relying on user fees to manage day-to-day operations.
First ship of the 2013 season recognized in Goderich ceremony

HEATHER BOA News Now GODERICH – Goderich’s mayor placed a ceremonial black top hat on Captain Wayne Penney’s head, officially recognizing the Algoma Navigator as the first boat of the 2013 season to arrive in Goderich Harbour today.
Like so many mayors before him, Mayor Deb Shewfelt presented the captain with gifts from the town. Like so many captains before him, Penney signed the hat’s head band.
“It’s got a lot of history behind it, this ceremony. Goderich has been a port for many, many, many years. A lot of people have come and gone and a lot of ships have taken a lot of cargo,” Penney said. He said to be the first ship in the port was an honour for both himself and the ship’s owner, Algoma Central Corporation.
Penney is from “a family of ocean-going sailing people.” He has sailed for 23 years, now working two months at a time before returning home to Paradise, Nfld. for one month. His brother, Fred, sailed for 43 years.
The Algoma Navigator and its 27 crew members arrived early this evening from Detroit. The ship, built in 1967, regularly transports grain, iron ore, coal, salt and aggregate around the Great Lakes. Over the next eight to 10 hours, it’s expected to load 24,000 tons of salt before heading on to Duluth, Minnesota, on Lake Superior.
The Algoma Navigator is a regular visitor to the Goderich Port, and was in the harbour when the tornado hit Sifto’s salt mine and cut a swath through the town and surrounding area on Aug. 21, 2011.
Goderich Port Management Corporation has recently hired a contractor to complete upgrades to the North Pier (Dock 1). The project, which will start immediately and run until approximately November 30th , is part of an ongoing program to improve facilities in the harbour. This current project will involve repairing and adding concrete as well as the placement of some gravel fill along the western section of the pier.
During the construction, there will be periods when the North Pier will be closed to the public.
Sifto Canada Announces Goderich, ON, Port Expansion Agreement
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (August 13, 2012) – Sifto Canada Corp., a subsidiary of Compass Minerals, today announced it has entered into an agreement with the Town of Goderich, ON, and the Goderich Port Management Corporation to expand and enhance the Port of Goderich.
“Together, we have developed a vision that offers exciting possibilities for the future of Goderich and Sifto,” said Rowland Howe, Canada country executive for Compass Minerals. “We believe this joint project will bring new cargoes, jobs and opportunities to the community while providing Sifto with additional site flexibility, particularly during the winter months.”
The plan calls for the creation of new land at the port, which would provide space for additional port traffic and would give Sifto additional storage options during the winter when the lake is closed.
“The port expansion would allow us to continue to produce rock salt when lake traffic can be limited because of ice, giving us more consistent production and employment levels throughout the year and enhancing our recent CA$70 million expansion,” Howe said
The project is expected to cost approximately CA$47.2 million, and will be financed in part through a CA$15.7 million infrastructure improvement grant from the province of Ontario, along with funds from the Goderich Port Management Corporation. Sifto’s additional fees, currently expected to total approximately CA$18.9 million over a five-year period, would provide Sifto with a renewable 25-year lease on the new land.
The plan requires completion of an environmental assessment, which is currently underway. Additionally, successful conclusions in feasibility evaluations and additional engineering studies must be finalized.
The company and the town of Goderich expect project completion in 2016.
First Cruise Ship of the Season Arrives in the Port of Goderich
The first cruise ship of the season has arrived in the Port of Goderich. The Yorktown, and her 138 onboard guests, arrived in Goderich at 10 A.M. on June 11, 2012. The Yorktown, owned by the Great Lakes Cruise Company, is 257-feet long, 43 feet wide and with a draft of only 8 feet is well-suited for Great Lakes cruising.
The Yorktown and her passengers were welcomed into the Port of Goderich by a piper, who will also see the ship off later this evening. Many passengers boarded a bus to see a performance in Stratford, but for those not going to see the play a shuttle bus will allow passengers to visit Goderich's historic Square.
The arrival of the Yorktown marks the beginning of a busy cruise ship season for the Port of Goderich. Throughout the summer, a total of eight cruises will visit Goderich.

Reconstruction of the South Pier slated to start this summer
The South Pier of Goderich Harbour will undergo reconstruction this summer, with work on the pier expected to begin August 1, 2012. Part of a larger harbour expansion project, the reconstruction of the South Pier will improve the overall structure and accessibility of the pier. Rowland Howe, Goderich Port Management Director, presented a three-dimensional rendering of the planned improvements to South Pier to Goderich Council on April 16.
The improved South Pier will feature an elevated walkway along the south side of the pier, as well as a concrete parapet to protect the pier from wave action. Ramps will provide access to the elevated walkway and will also double as seating. A series of bollards on the north side will allow for cruise ships and other large vessels using the harbour to tie up to the South Pier.

Capt. Peter Schultz guided the Peter R. Cresswell into port Friday morning to officially open the shipping season. Deputy-mayor, John Grace, presented the ceremonial top hat to Capt. Schultz, the 81st time the ceremony has taken place.
While the shipping season was never really suspended for the winter months, the first captain into port for the 2012 season was formally recognized at town hall Friday.
Captain Peter Schultz guided the Peter R. Cresswell into port at 9:15 Friday morning after delivering a load of cement to Detroit.
It’s the first time Capt. Schultz has opened the shipping season in Goderich and taken part in the ceremonial top hat presentation, a tradition that has endured for 81 years.
“I’ve been running into Goderich for 12 years but this is the first time that we entered port to open the shipping season,” he said. “One year I ran the Agawa Canyon into Goderich port 42 times. Last year I made about 12 trips into port.”
Last year, Capt. Schultz had the distinction of opening the season through the Welland Canal.
The Peter R. Creswell loaded with 25,000 tons of salt destined for Prescott.
Capt. Schultz noted that last year the water level was +13 inches in Goderich and Friday the level was down one foot to +1 inch.
Goderich port expansion project becomes reality
Private/public partnership between province, Sifto, GPMC

It is a far cry from the $1,600 first paid by Samuel Platt in 1866, but the $47 million dollar expansion of the Goderich Harbour will finally be a reality thanks to a public/private partnership between Sifto Salt, the Goderich Port Management Corporation and the Provincial government.
In making the announcement Thursday, June 30, Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell thanked the tireless efforts of GPMC President Al Hamilton, Mine Manager Rowland Howe, Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt and CAO Larry McCabe.
"After four years of working with the town and Sifto and the port corporation, we have finally delivered on our commitment," Mitchell said. "Providing $15.7 million for improvements and expansion to the Port of Goderich."
The remainder of the money will come from Sifto and from increased wharfage fees and will not affect the municipal tax base at all. All told, six new hectares (15 acres) of land will be created off the north harbour, as well as two new loading terminals and improvements to other infrastructure, including breakwalls and some work on North Harbour Road.
The increased capacity will allow for the agriculture, mining and aggregate businesses to ship more by sea, and will create more than 500 construction jobs, and 150 new, local jobs.
"This is our window to the world for all these good things grown and mined in Ontario and Huron-Bruce," Mitchell said.
It's been 13 years since the acquisition of Goderich Harbour from the federal government, said Mayor Deb Shewfelt, and a new chapter is about to be written on the very same harbour that helped incubate the Town of Goderich.
"The harbour played a part in the development of the whole area," he said. "Generations will look back and see this day as the start of a bright future."
What helped make the project a win-win, he said, was the goodwill from all sides of the bargaining table, noting the long hours that went into negotiating the agreement. Though it was long, hard work, everyone did their part.
"I think it's been very stressful," he said. "There are a lot of parties involved. Any areas that were obstacles we have always been able to surmount them."
A key negotiator in the project, Howe gave credit to the town for "actively supporting a program of renewal and investment," in the harbour.
The new infill will allow Sifto to take full advantage of their new storage facility, moving more tonnage of salt and taking trucks off the road.
"This is a path to get goods to a market that is underutilized," he said. The mine will have lease options on the new property for 25 years, and will use the storage year-round.
GPMC President Hamilton said the operating structure of the port has worked well for the past 13 years, and saw Thursday's announcement as a way to move forward with it.
"It's a great place for people to move cargo through the area," he said, adding the new space will also help attract new users to the only sea-depth port on this side of Lake Huron.
Town CAO McCabe, who worked hundreds of hours on the project over the past two years, said the announcement is the result of strong partnerships.
"We had the history and the ability to partner and make this happen," he said. "We've proven we could make this a reality."
While it will take some time to gather the materials and complete the necessary studies, construction could begin within the next two years. Some environmental assessment work is already completed for the break wall and piers, leaving most of the physical work.
Goderich Harbour Expansion Ready To Move Ahead
The 47-million dollar harbour expansion in Goderich is now ready to proceed. Huron-Bruce M-P-P Carol Mitchell announced the province's 15.7 million dollar share of the funding this morning. The other partners are the Goderich Port Management Corporation and Sifto. Al Hamilton is President of the Goderich Port Management Corporation and says the expansion will provide several benefits, starting with the addition of fifteen acres of land.
Hamilton points out the land will be primarily to allow Sifto to expand its operation but will also attract new businesses to the port and that will mean new jobs.
