History of the Harbour

The Port of Goderich, formed from the original mouth of the Maitland river, is situated on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Wendat and Neutral peoples, whose stewardship of lands dates back countless generations. Commercial development of the port began in the 1820s when the Canada Company constructed two wooden piers to protect the harbour from wind and waves off Lake Huron. Over the course of the 19th century the port became a hive of activity supporting local lumber, grain, salt, and general cargo trades, as well as hosting fishing vessels, and a shipyard.
In 1872, the Maitland River was diverted North creating the area that is now North Harbour Road and by 1911, with the construction of the breakwaters, the harbour had largely taken its current shape. Industrial development continued at the port notably with the opening of the Sifto Salt Mine in 1959, which continues to be operated by Compass Minerals.
In 1999, the Town of Goderich purchased the Harbour from Transport Canada and formed the Goderich Port Management Corporation with port users to oversee management of the asset. Today, the Port of Goderich continues to operate and to serve as an important commercial shipping port for Southwestern Ontario and beyond.
